Akanji in tears as England celebrate

Walker goes across to give his Manchester City teammate a hug...England progress, and will face either Netherlands or Türkiye in the semi-finals.

+ 2

5-3: Alexander-Arnold sends England into semis

And so Alexander-Arnold was brought on for a penalty...he steps up. Score, and he sends England through...and he does! Emphatically sending Sommer the wrong way and England into the semi-finals.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

4-3: Amdouni has to score

Zeki Amdouni is another late substitute...he has to score or England progress and Switzerland go home...he does. Oh, so cool from a very very good young player. Rightt down the middle, waited for Pickford to make the first move.

Zeki Amdouni

4-2: Toney...scores

Ivan Toney only came off the bench late on...but it doesn't matter as he sticks his penalty away with just a step run-up. Sommer went the right way, but it was too precise.

3-2: Shaqiri...scores

Shaqiri....only just squeezes that past Pickford, who goes to his left, but the strike is a little to far in the corner, a little too high.

3-1: Saka so cool

Saka scored in normal time, but did miss a penalty in the EURO 2020 final...not this time as he sends Sommer the wrong way. That was a cool finish.

2-1: Schär up next for Swiss...

Another centre-back for Switzerland...but not the same result as Schär sends Pickford the wrong way.

2-0: Bellingham....scores

Bellingham places the ball on the spot...Sommer points to his left...and that's where Bellingham puts it, but the Swiss keeper goes the other way.

1-0: Pickford denies Akanji

Pickford makes Akanji wait for Switzerland's first spot-kick...and maybe it worked as the England goalkeeper saves. That's such a shame for the defender, who had an amazingly good game.

Extra-time ends: England 1-1 Switzerland

And so it's penalties...

Widmer chance

Amdouni's first action is to have a powerful shot parried by Pickford...the ball comes into the England box again, Widmer lunges at the back's wide. That was another chance, even if it wasn't an easy one.

Shaqiri so close

Corner on the right, Shaqiri to bend it in...he does, with real venom going for goal. The ball smacks off the angle of the near post and crossbar...Pickford gives the former Bayern man a thumbs-up of appreciation for his audacity.

Penalties in mind?

Alexander-Arnold's dead-ball delivery is well-known - has the Liverpool man been brought on for a penalty shoot-out or to create a game-winning chance?

Scrambled away

Switzerland sweep forward, and there's real panic in the England box as the ball comes in from Rodríguez, but they manage to clear the danger.

Extra-time 2nd half kicks off

15 minutes to go...

Extra-time half-time: England 1-1 Switzerland

No real chances created in that first 15 minutes. There's 15 more and - if there are no goals - then it's penalties.

Bellingham chance

Bellingham sees a first shot blocked by Xhaka just inside the box, but it drops again for the England midfielder - his weaker left-foot effort is easily caught by Sommer.

England on the front foot

They don't have too much choice other than to attack with Saka, Palmer, Eze, Foden and Kane all on the pitch. That's a lot of firepower, but will they make it count?

Rice blast

Rice takes aim from 25 metres and lashes a shot goal wards. It takes a great flying save to his left from Sommer to keep that out.

Schär miscue

In a good position on the right side of the box, Schär ends up having to apologise as the ball fizzes off his shin as he attempted to play in a cross.

Extra-time 1st half kicks off

We start what will be a nail-biting extra 30 minutes for both sets of fans.

+ 3

Schär sparks scramble

It's a fantastic ball in from the right by Schär, and red shirts are queuing up at the back post. Embolo gets a touch and actually takes it away from Ndoye before Zuber blasts the loose ball high and wide.

Added time

We've got three minutes to go before extra-time.

Eze effort

The ball is moved right to left by England, Eze has it, Shaw makes the overlap...Eze can cut back inside, and drills a shot in. But he's left with his head in his hands as he drags it well wide of the near post.

Yellow card

We're looking at another 30 minutes in Düsseldorf at this rate. But Switzerland will be well aware England scored twice late on against Slovakia in the last round.

GOAL!! England 1-1 Switzerland

England's tactical change - basically getting even more men forward - pays off almost instantly. Saka gets the ball on the left, takes a couple of steps inside and bends a superb shot inside the far post to bring England level. That came out of nowhere!

GOAL!! England 0-1 Switzerland

Switzerland work the ball left to right, Schär finds Ndoye and his cross is touched by Stones...and runs perfectly for Embolo to lunge in at the back post to give Murat Yakin's side a deserved lead.

© Carl Recine

Cutting edge

Has been singularly lacking from both sides so far. Just one shot on target - Embolo's effort earlier this half - between the pair with just over 15 minutes of the 90 to go.

Bookings and bans

Just a reminder that any cards that have not led to a suspension are cancelled after the quarter-final stage, meaning everyone starts with a clean slate in the last four. So far, no one has incurred a semi-final suspension.

More Swiss pressure

Rodríguez again delivers a quality cross from the left, it's headed into the air by Stones and drops for Aebischer, who sends a half-volley well over the crossbar.

Yellow card

Bundesliga pedigree

Ex-Hoffenheim and Stuttgart man Zuber joins Mainz's Widmer in coming on.

Quick thinking from Vargas

The Augsburg man nips in to win the ball down the right, he hares down the flank, but his cross - intended for Embolo - is cut out.

Switzerland pushing

While England struggle when they get into the final third, Switzerland are incisive. Akanji's long ball out from the back finds Ndoye, and as red shirts charge upfield, he wins a corner off Konsa.

Embolo vs Konsa Part II

Rodríguez bends a great ball in with that left foot Wolfsburg fans know so well. Embolo is there, but so is Konsa, and the England defender makes life difficult enough for his opponent that he can't get a clean header on goal.

Akanji again

A Walker throw-in is brought down with difficulty by Kane, who immediately is forced to surrender possession to Akanji.

Embolo tests Pickford

It's not a powerful effort, but it was on target from Embolo, who swivelled round Konsa after a fine through ball from Freuler. That was a good move from Switzerland, and it actually all started from a Xhaka pass.

Bellingham burst

The England midfielder takes the ball on the halfway line, turns away from Ndoye and carries it all the way into the Switzerland penalty box. He can't quite find Kane with the pass.

2nd half kicks off

Switzerland get us going again in Düsseldorf. No changes for either side.

Xhaka saves Swiss

Saka muscles his way past Aebischer (not for the first time) on the right, and tees up Mainoo close in. Xhaka lunges to turn the ball behind for a corner. That could have been the opening goal but for the Leverkusen man. Great piece of defending.

Akanji keeping Kane quiet

Switzerland's former Dortmund defender has - so far - kept Kane quiet. The Bayern Munich forward has not been able to escape his minder.

Entertaining, but...

We're yet to have a shot on target in Düsseldorf, though there have been a good few blocks and timely interceptions that have led to neither 'keeper having had to make a save yet.

Bellingham = Zidane

The England midfielder produces a delightful roulette made famous by France's legendary World Cup and EURO winner, bringing a few oohs and aahs from the crowd.

Yellow card

First booking

Schär steps across and blocks Bellingham's charge down the left. That will be the game's first yellow card, and the Newcastle United defender can't really complain. Even if he does.

Saka again

The Arsenal man once again gets round Aebischer and once more sends in a low cross - he was looking for Kane, but Akanji clears.

Embolo effort

Bellingham's flick intended for Kane is intercepted. Embolo picks it up on the edge of the England area, he swivels and shoots, but Konsa is there to block and then poke the loose ball away from the Switzerland forward.

Saka threat

Foden lifts a great ball over the top for Saka, who pings a low cross into the six-yard box. Schär clears for a corner.

England pressing

Compared to England's first four games at this tournament, the first 20 minutes in Düsseldorf have been full of energy and enterprise. Switzerland are a real threat on the counter-attack though.

Mainoo tries his luck

England move stylishly up the pitch, and there's a shooting opportunity for Mainoo just outside the penalty area. There's another block, but Southgate will be encouraged by what he has seen in response to a strong Swiss opening.

Rice blast

The ball breaks to Rice just outside the box, but a Schär leg shoots out to send the ball harmlessly out for a throw-in. It was well struck though, and Switzerland will have to won't be able to give the England man that sort of space in that position too often.

England on the ball

England enjoy a long spell of possession, but don't really threaten the Swiss goal. When Bellingham does try to squeeze a ball through, it's blocked. Murat Yakin has his team well organised.

Swiss danger

Augsburg man Vargas and then new Stuttgart loan signing Rieder arrow dangerous crosses into the England area from the left and right flanks respectively in quick succession. Tremendous deliveries.

Ndoye burst

Ndoye charges down the right, he's away from Trippier...Mainoo boots away the dangerous low cross into the box. Switzerland look really dangerous on both flanks.

Freuler flick

The ball comes into the feet of the Switzerland midfielder just inside the England area. He attempts to flick it into the path of the unmarked Embolo, but it strikes Konsa. The England defender didn't know too much about that, but England will be happy he was there. That could have been very dangerous.

England pressing

In possession, England are playing higher up the pitch than they have done in their games so far. Will the switch to a back three bear fruit?

Frantic start

Both teams are struggling to get their passing going in the early minutes, but Switzerland have looked (slightly) more settled in the sun.

1st half kicks off

And we are underway in Düsseldorf to see who'll join Spain and France in the semi-finals.

Bundesliga duo meets

Kane and Xhaka, the respective captains today, meet for the coin toss - two Bundesliga stars leading the sides in this Euro 2024 quarter-final.

Anthem time

And both get a more than rousing rendition from both sets of fans...a tremendous atmosphere in Düsseldorf.

Kane the key?

The Bayern Munich forward has scored five goals in his last five EURO knockout games. He can also draw level with Alan Shearer as England's all-time leading EURO scorer on seven career strikes in the continental showpiece. But will he be able to find a way past Yann Sommer?

Rice vs. Xhaka

There's an interesting match-up in midfield with England's Declan Rice coming up against the man he replaced at Arsenal, Granit Xhaka. The Switzerland captain's switch to Bayer Leverkusen didn't go too badly, did it?

No changes for Yakin

The Switzerland coach makes no changes to the side that defeated Italy. So though Silvan Widmer is available after suspension, Dan Ndoye retains his place. It's the first time in the tournament Murat Yakin has not tinkered with his starting XI.

Switzerland line-up

Sommer - Schär, Akanji, Rodríguez - Rieder, Freuler, Xhaka (c), Aebischer - Ndoye, Embolo, Vargas

Konsa in

England go with three at the back as Ezri Konsa comes in for the suspended Marc Guehi. Bukayo Saka starts as left wing-back, so no Luke Shaw. Kieran Trippier starts on the right.

Swiss team effort

The seven goals they've scored have come from seven different players with the pick of the bunch surely the stunner scored by former Bayern Munich man Xherdan Shaqiri against Scotland. He's still got the ability to turn a game, and - despite having been around for what seems like decades - is only 32.

Shaw and Kane scored against Switzerland the last time these two met as England registered a 2-1 victory in a March 2022 friendly. Former Schalke and Gladbach forward Breel Embolo had opened the scoring at Wembley (see tweet below)

In 27 previous meetings, England have lost just three times to Switzerland. The English have won 19, while there have been five draws between the two nations. It's been 13 matches since Switzerland have claimed victory in this fixture, dating all the way back to May 1981.

How they got here: England

By the skin of their teeth. After topping their group, England were moments away from being dumped out by Slovakia in the last-16 until ex-Borussia Dortmund man Jude Bellingham's overhead kick sent the game to extra-time. One minute into the additional 30 and they had a winner via the head of Bayern Munich's Harry Kane. Both men will be heavily relied upon once again in the quarters.

How they got here: Switzerland

The Swiss finished second behind Germany in Group A, with a win and two draws in the group stage. They then pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the tournament by knocking out reigning champs Italy in the last-16. Goals from Remo Freuler and Augsburg star Ruben Vargas sealed that 2-0 win and they're now in with a real chance of reaching their first European Championship semi-final.
